Awards
- 2023.10.16
- 2022.10.16
S3 flight award & 2nd Overall
EuRoC
The S3 flight award stands for solid propulsion & 3 kilometers of apogee. It is attributed to the team with the most merit in meters away from the target apogee, but also by the state of the rocket after recovery, and thus honors designs that not only survive the harsh contact with reality, but furthermore represent an incredible achievement in concept, simulation, system integration, control, and practical realization.

Winning Team (Mag-AZ): Astro Pi Mission Space Lab 2020/2021
The Astro Pi Team
Challenge run by the European Space Agency, in cooperation with the Raspberry Foundation, in which students are challenged to plan and perform an experiment with the use of a Raspberry Pi on board the International Space Station.
Publications

2022.05.23 Modelling the Earth’s magnetic field
American Journal of Physics
Using measurements from a magnetometer on board the International Space Station, we computed the multipolar moments of an expansion in spherical harmonics to order 3, calculated the location of the magnetic dip poles, and produced an intensity map of the magnetic field across the globe.
-
2021.07.31 Modelling the Earth's magnetic field with magnetometer data from a Raspberry Pi on board the ISS
We used data from a magnetometer on board the ISS to simulate the Earth’s magnetic field. This was our original work within the "Astro Pi Challenge", a project ran by ESA and the Raspberry Pi Foundation, and the magnetometer used was the one incorporated in the Raspberry Pi Sense Hat.

Professor Filipe Mena | |
On a personal level, I can testify that Lourenço was among the students who showed the highest interest and enthusiasm in class as well as hard work in solving the weekly exercises. He is very inquisitive and keen on having discussions about maths and physics subjects “outside the box”. |
Professor Marta Fajardo | |
In our country, largely for financial reasons, students are very seldom prepared to build their own apparatus. They are therefore very trained and become very skilled in “pen and paper” maths and physics, but are afraid to touch and debug complex equipment. This is not the case for Lourenço. |
Volunteer
-
2012.09 - 2017.02 Azores, Portugal
Scout
Associação dos Escoteiros de Portugal - Agrupamento 1133
Assisted in vounteering initiatives with social and environmental impact. I also had some fun in nature related activities, mainly camping and hiking trips.
